Amy Woods Talks Art Therapy

Fun Facts about His Texas Forever Family by Amy Woods

Author of His Texas Forever FamilyHi and thanks so much for having me as a guest. His Texas Forever Family is out on physical and virtual shelves, and I hope you enjoy the story as much as I loved writing it.

Here are some insider facts about the book.

Although the book’s setting, Peach Leaf, Texas is a fictional small town, it’s loosely based on one of my all-time real favorite places—Fredericksburg, Texas.

Fredericksburg is a town in West Texas with a population of a little over 10,000, and was founded in 1846 and named after Prince Frederick of Prussia. Both Fredericksburg and Peach Leaf are home to several amazing German restaurants boasting excellent beer and mouth-watering Reuben sandwiches, and Pioneer Museums that share artifacts and tons of information about the towns’ intriguing histories.

Okay now I’m getting hungry! I’ll have to convince the hubby that another research trip is required in the near future.

Art therapy is a fascinating field. Liam Campbell, the hero of His Texas Forever Family, is both an art teacher and an art therapist with lots of experience helping kiddos overcome obstacles. I really, really enjoyed researching art therapy while writing this story.

As a former teacher, I’ve encountered many children who, after enduring some sort of trauma, are unable to process grief in a way that allows them to move beyond a difficult life event.

Art therapy is one of the many amazing forms of therapy available to kids (and adults) like my character, Owen, in the book. It takes his mom, Paige, quite a while to accept Liam’s help with her son, but once she does, she finds that art therapy is truly effective in helping Owen to overcome the death of his father.

Through my research for this book, I came across many stories of people who had triumphed over adversity and various forms of trauma with the help of art therapy. There are so many incredible methods of healing out there, from classic behavioral therapy and talk therapy to horse therapy and art therapy—it seems there are as many ways of healing from difficulty as there are unique people, which I think is a beautiful thing.

I hope that, as you read His Texas Forever Family, you’ll learn more about some of the beauty of small-town Texas, as well as the possibilities of art therapy.  And I’m always open to questions! 🙂

Author of His Texas Forever Family

Although she’s wanted to be a writer since learning to read, Amy Woods took the scenic route to her job as an author. She’s been a bookkeeper, a high school English teacher, a claims specialist, and a call-center worker, but now that she’s tried making up stories for a living, she’s never giving it up.
