Getting in the Mood for Writing with Delancey Stewart

I’m always curious about other author’s writing process, today Delancey Stewart talks about hers. Enjoy.

Photo of Delancey StewartI guess there are two ways to look at my writing process –  and it totally depends on whether I’m elbow-deep in a book that I’m working on, or if I’m at the stage of conceptualizing.

The first is the nitty-gritty day-to-day writing. And since I’ve got kids, a job, and lots of time-sucking obligations outside of writing, it happens early. Like 5-6:30 in the morning. It’s not much fun, and the snooze button is a serious temptation, but once I get myself to the desk with a steaming cup of coffee, this is my best writing time.

My brain isn’t fully on, so I don’t self-edit too much. In order for it to work well, though, I have to have done good planning. I try to spend a little time at night reviewing whatever I produced in the morning; editing and making sure things are on track. And I’ll try to set myself up for the next day so that when I sit down half-asleep, I know what I need to write about. If I’ve done all that, and I manage it almost daily, then the words come pretty easily most of the time.

If I’m in between books, or plotting something new, there’s less of a daily routine. Instead, I try to do the broad strokes mentally over the course of a couple days, letting my brain work on who the characters are, what they want, what’s stopping them from getting it… then, when I’ve hit a wall, I’ll sit down and write out a couple pages without worrying too much about the actual writing – more of a “this is what happens” kind of thing. A synopsis, really. That helps me figure out how to break up scenes, chapters, and acts. And then I build a new Scrivener project and get to work!

(The Company #1)
Publication date: May 6th 2014
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Synopsis:

The world of professional ballet is built on illusion. The illusion of perfection. The illusion of effortless beauty. The illusion of eternal love.

But backstage, few members of the Union Ballet Company suffer from such illusions.

Anna Glaser has dreamed of nothing but dancing professionally her entire life. And when she’s finally offered a position with Union, she takes it, giving little more than a passing thought to what she might have to give up in exchange. But Sebastian Kaplan, the director who gave her the chance, won’t forget so easily.

When Anna meets Cain, who has been dubbed by the local media as Union’s most eligible bachelor, she realizes that making a deal with the devil might mean that Heaven — in the form of a gorgeous dark-haired man — is forever out of her reach.

Dancers at Union know that something that glitters and shines under the stage lights can still be vicious and evil when the lights go down.

Adagio is the first episode in the series The Company – an engaging drama-filled ride through the darker parts of the ballet and the lives of those who live to dance.

  1. Snooze button is my BFF! haha! Great post, ladies! I’m not a writer but I can imagine it takes a lot of self discipline and time management to get things done for your deadline(s)!
