L.A. Starkey Talks About Her Writing Process

Different writers have different writing processes. It is amazing the things we do to get in the mood or get in our groove space so to speak. Author L.A. Starkey talks about her writing process. Enjoy!

Photo of L.A StarkeyI should start by letting you in on a little secret – I write really fast, like uber fast. I need like three editors to make sense to my madness, but I can run through 3000 words or roughly a chapter an hour, so on a good 5-6 hours span I can write 1/4th of a normal sized novel.

The process I use for my writing is simple really. I just come up with a high-level plot arch as in what do I want to happen? What’s the story about? I open a blank word doc and put a few notes, name the main characters and put some physical feature information in for them.

I decide how long the novel will be before I start and I have a sticky note next to me letting me know my hopeful word count needed before putting a new chapter heading. My characters basically jump forth and write the books for me, so I just toggle back and forth to that “notes” word doc to update things that I need to remember to wrap up plot-wise later, new characters and things I might need for future storytelling.

After I wrap up a story I shoot the file to my editor in rough format and we start working together on it. I don’t write more than one story at a time because it’s just easier to remain focus on whatever I’m working on at the moment. I usually give myself about 2 weeks to write a novel unless I’m behind and then it’s serious go-time!

I’ve attached a few pictures, one of my desk and one of me at a book festival that I went through this year. Loads of fun!

Synopsis:

They say a soul is the immaterial essence, the animating principle, the actuating cause of an individual life.

But what if you had to share yours with the one person you hated the most?

The soul mate principle states that for every one soul there is another that will recognize its match, hence creating the perfect union.

But what if you had two soul mates, which would you choose?

What if your choices had eternal ramification?

Deceived, the debut novel in the Soul Keeper Series, is a modern day love story about the implications of having more than one soul mate, and having to choose between the two of them. The decisions of the gods has left the next generation, their heirs, torn between fate and reality, and the balance of the future hangs in anticipation of what’s to come.
