Anna Soliveres Shares Her Writing Process

Anna SoliveresToday’s guest post is by Anna Soliveres. Anna lets us in on how she keeps up with her writing commitment while balancing a full-time job that involves travelling.

I work a full-time job that requires a lot of travel during the busy seasons. It’s hard to get myself to switch gears after a long day of work. The hardest part is finding motivation to write, especially when I’m bone-weary and nothing sounds better than relaxing, watching a movie, or reading a good book.

Writing can feel like work, especially because I place a lot of pressure on myself to make progress and to meet word count goals. For the longest time, my own goals worked against me. It wasn’t until I “freed” up my routine, changed it up to make it fun and free of any commitment or pressure that I found myself writing more–and writing better. Hooray!

What was this big change you ask? After a year of little progress on a story I couldn’t wait to finish but lacked the inspiration to, I decided to step away from my laptop, the sad blank pages, and judgmental blinking cursor, and picked up a journal.

At first I wrote bulleted points, and then I started writing whole scenes on paper. When I transferred them to my Scrivener file, it gave me the chance to fine-tune the scene and edit heavily. It was an incredible discovery for me. Especially after a year of not being able to write.

Here I was easily writing 2000 to 3000 words in one sitting. This works best for me because it feels like a lot less pressure to get a scene started, knowing that I don’t have to commit to it and that I can always go back and change it. When I’m in a writing groove that feels a lot like listening to smooth jazz music, I put down the pen and go straight to my Scrivener file, taking advantage of the fact that I can type a lot faster than I can write by hand.

  1. Great post! I think finding a way that makes it feel like a hobby, like something you enjoy, and not a chore or work is the best idea! Sometimes just a small change can make a difference! 🙂

    1. Well said. I liked that she writes in bullet points. I outline beat by beat and that helps.
