Fashion in Fiction, Waiting For Prince Harry

PrinceHarry authorAvenFashion in Fiction. Guest post by Aven Ellis

I’ll confess: I love fashion. Like I pin fashion ideas on my Pinterest boards. I eagerly wait for the latest copy of In Style magazine to come out. I love looking in my favorite stores and to see what new looks are in for the season.

So it only makes sense that fashion is a huge part of my books.

To me, the clothing closet is a key part in developing my characters. In Waiting For Prince Harry, Kylie Reed, the heroine, works in visual display for a chic Dallas boutique and is an aspiring designer. Obviously fashion is very important to Kylie, and I show her personality through the outfits she wears in the book. Kylie loves vintage things, so while her clothes are modern, they have a vintage edge to them. Think updated Jackie O or Grace Kelly. She loves dresses, jewelry, and purses.

But when Kylie is at home and wants to relax, she changes into yoga pants and a tank top after work. And that is a key to her personality, too–comfortable at home, which is where she loves to be.

Fashion doesn’t only apply to the heroine in this book. Harrison Flynn, the hockey playing hero, is very fashion forward. Hockey players dress in suits when traveling and a lot of them are known for having good style. So I researched hockey players and fashion and developed a fashion style for Harrison: sharp suits on the road and a casual look that would work for hot Dallas summers. Think cargo shorts, linen shirts–but accessorized with cool bracelets and hip shoes. The accessories and shoes add the edge that Harrison’s character has both on and off the ice.

So Harrison is a man who knows exactly what he wants to wear and what works for him. This same personality trait can be applied not only to his fashion choices but to knowing what he wants in a partner, too.

Because when Harrison meets Kylie, he knows what he wants and that she would be potentially a good fit for him–just like the perfect Tom Ford suit.

Waiting For Prince Harry by Aven Ellis
Publication date: April 2nd 2014
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Synopsis:

Twenty-four-year-old Kylie Reed has always been a rule follower. Organized and cautious to a fault, her dreams for life are often filed away for future use—when she has a house, when she meets her future husband, when she has been at her visual display job at a chic Dallas boutique longer…Kylie always has a reason for living her life in the future, not in the present, and not living her life to the fullest and reaching her dream of becoming a fashion designer.

The only exception to rules, of course, would be running away with Prince Harry—Kylie’s ideal man. A hot, fun ginger boy would be worth breaking all the rules for, of course.  And Kylie is sure Harry just needs the right, centering woman to settle him down.  But living in Dallas and not knowing Prince Harry make this a non-option.

Or does it?

Because when Kylie accidentally falls into the lap of a gorgeous ginger boy—yes, even more gorgeous than the real Prince Harry—all bets are off. Could this stranger be the one to show Kylie how to take a chance, to face her fears, and live in the present?  And could this stranger be the Prince Harry she has been waiting for? Kylie’s life takes some unexpected twists and turns thanks to this chance encounter, and she knows her life will never be the same because of it…

About Aven Ellis

Aven Ellis has been writing fiction since she was sixteen. She studied communications at a large Midwestern university, and after graduation, Aven worked as a reporter for a community newspaper, followed by a stint at a public relations agency.

But writing about city council meetings and restaurant franchises was not as much fun as writing for young women trying to figure out their careers and potential boyfriends. So Aven got herself a job in television that allowed her to write at night. Connectivity is Aven’s debut novel; Waiting For Prince Harry and Chronicles of a Lincoln Park Fashionista (New Adult romantic comedy) will be published next year.

Aven lives in Dallas with her family. When she is not writing, Aven enjoys shopping, cooking, connecting with friends on social media, and watching any show that features Gordon Ramsay.

  1. I don’t always notice fashion in books but when it’s a historical or steampunk I really love the clothes! Especially when the setting really comes to life with it – one helps the other, too, imo!

    1. I totally agree! I incorporate fashion in my novels too, it completely adds another dimension to the characters. I think it depends on how it is used. THis was a great post I loved her take and the cover rocks!
