2 Broads Abroad: Moms Fly the Coop

2 BROADS ABROAD: Moms Fly the Coop by Deborah Serra & Nancy Serra Greene

2 Broads authorsWhen my sister, Nancy, and I realized motherhood was a temp job we decided to run away from home. Both of our youngest daughters were leaving for college the same week and we didn’t like the vacancy sign on our family home.  Whatever the reason your last kid moves out, whether it’s college, a new job, or a desire to live out of their car, it’s a big change in the daily life of a mom. Moms handle this transition differently: some get puppies, some take-in exchange students, and some start eating a pint of ice cream every day. While all of these options were valid, they were not for us. We refuse to plod into the sunset, fifty pounds heavier, in a gaudy sundress.

My sister and I sat together over a bottle of tequila looking at our future and realizing we needed either a big new plan or several more cases of tequila.  We looked at what the future had to offer, and it was mostly waiting: waiting for school breaks, waiting for our husbands to come home from work, waiting for the kids to call, waiting for the holidays to say hello, and then, good-bye again. Waiting hurt. And we did not like who that made us.

I had always worked as a writer during the hours that my kids were in school, and Nancy simply did everything: the PTA, the Assistance League, the School Fundraiser, she was sports Team Mom, Classroom Mom, Field Trip Mom, you get the picture. All that was over. Now, there would be no neighborhood boys throwing open our refrigerator door like it was their own, no little girls with tiny bottles of polish working on their toenails, no arguing between siblings, no half-eaten remnants of Mexican food under the bed, no tire marks to be seen over the grass where the driveway had definitely “moved”, and no curious profusion of ping pong balls even though we do not own a ping pong table. But, alas, no more dance programs, or volleyball games, no moments of peeking in while they’re sleeping, no moments of unplanned togetherness. I suppose that’s the worst of it – the fact that now we must plan to be together. Yes, that’s the worst that being with each other is no longer the default.

For the past twenty years, like all moms we put everyone else’s needs before our own: children, husband, home, friends, neighbors, hamsters.  We did it because we wanted to, no one demanded it, and there is a lot to feel good about, and memories too precious to replace. We have no regrets. Now, though, we needed to kick-start our lives in another direction.  We needed an adventure! We announced our intention to travel together and write a book: 2 Broads Abroad: Moms Fly the Coop.  Look out Ireland here we come and we’re thirsty!

Come along.

Genre:  Motherhood

Synopsis:

When sisters, Deborah & Nancy, discovered that motherhood was a temp job they decided to run away from home. After packing up that last kid for college, and facing the sad stillness of their suddenly quiet homes, they decided to leave the country. 2 BROADS ABROAD: MOMS FLY THE COOP is a funny, irreverent, occasionally poignant travel tale of their impulsive road trip around Ireland.

In this witty warm-hearted adventure, they experienced some of Ireland’s quirkier history while sharing universally relatable stories of maniacal school coaches, neurotic neighbors, and tiger moms. Having kicked that empty nest into their rearview mirror, the sisters took off careening down the wrong side of the road, making questionable choices, getting trapped in a medieval tower, sneaking Chinese take-out into a famous cooking school, drinking way too much, and gaining a changed perspective on their lives ahead.
