Suits on Netflix

This post contains spoilers.

When I was first introduced to Suits it was airing on the USA Network. Since I don’t subscribe to cable, as an Amazon Prime member I got it with my subscription. They only had limited episodes so I didn’t see seasons 7 or 8 until Netflix walked in.

When Suits landed on Netflix it got a whole new life, people who didn’t know about the series before started watching, maybe because of Dutchess Markle or because it was a winner when it was on the USA Network. Either way, it racked up many viewing hours, and I am guilty of adding to that.

When it premiered on Netflix I restarted the whole season and fell in love with the characters again.

It reminded me how much fun it is to be a powerful woman while looking stylish AF (I see you, Jessica Pearson).

How when you find your ride-or-die friendships, you hold tight even though it can be a bumpy ass road (Harvey and Mike bros for life).

Or how even the biggest asshole can be redeemed and save the sinking ship (hats off to you Louis Litt).

The dynamic of the show changed after Mike and Rachel left at the end of season 7 and I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about the changes and the new cast members. It takes great writing to pull off losing not one but two pillars of a show and still keep fans interested. Many shows have tried and died.

Season 8 leaves us with new management and restructuring of the firm. Welcome Zane, Spector, Litt (and the other 2). Even though Jessica left in an earlier season, she still popped in from time to time, but in these episodes, only her name is mentioned.

Old foes return and some of the shady shit that Harvey and Mike did came back to bite the new team smack dab in their butts.

The Characters, Old and New

The biggest surprise for me was the transformation of Louis Litt. It happened gradually, and by the end, he was one of the best characters on the show. The thing about Louis’s character is that somewhere along the road we became invested in his growth and well-being and by the end, we cheered for him. He finally got his happily-ever-after and the respect of the famous golden boy, Harvey Spector.

Donna Paulson proves that she is a force to be reckoned with. Of course, we knew this from the earlier seasons but she finally got to put her talent to use when she became one of the pillars of the new company.

Robert Zane was a nice full-time addition to the cast. He was always an interesting character and I am glad that they brought him into the fold.

Samantha (Sam) Wheeler is one of the less desirable characters added to the cast. She starts out as the cold calculated larkey of Robert Zane and by the end of season 8, not much had changed, but I could kind of get her. Kind of.

I was very happy to see Katrina Bennett coming into herself and standing up to Sam (who thinks the world owes her). Katrina came in as unlikeable in her earlier dealings with Mike, but as their friendship improved so did my view of her.

Alex Williams is sort of a boring character we met in earlier episodes. He comes off as whiney and a sub-par lawyer compared to Sam.

Conclusion

The f-bombs never grew on me. It started back in season 7 which was a total surprise because the worst they had ever said was goddam. Now I kind of cringe when I hear them say it, although when Louis says it, it sounds funny.

The bottom line is that I still love the show. The writing and the acting are still top-notch. I’ve been hearing whispers of a Suits reboot and fingers crossed that it is true. I could see Mike and Rachel coming back with their names on the wall. I could see Harvey and Donna as New York’s power couple. And Louis has the life he deserves and dreams of. Where’s the drama that makes good TV? I’ve found that the drama in Suits comes mostly from the cases that bring out the worst or best in the characters.

I could do without Sam or Alex, no offense to the characters but I kind of want my OG back. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
